HOW IS SLEEP APNEA TREATED?

Mild cases can sometimes be treated with weight loss, modification of sleeping position and use of oral devices.
Moderate to severe cases are usually treated with CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure). CPAP delivers a prescribed pressure to act as an “Air Splint” in holding airways open. There is also a BIPAP (Bi-level positive airway pressure) machine used in moderate to severe cases which delivers an inspiratory and expiratory pressure level to “Breathe” with the patient more normally.
Extreme cases may require a tracheostomy, the only form of treatment until the early 1980’s. This is a surgical procedure creating a permanent opening in the neck with insertion of a tube. This is usually used today as a last resort for sleep apnea.
The treatment for Sleep Apnea has grown by leaps and bounds in the past decade, with new methods of treatment evolving everyday. Please consult your physician to determine which treatment is best suited to your needs and condition.
